Happy Easter from Spike's World

I really liked this cartoon when I drew it, and I still do. Notice the bunny ears and little cotton tail. Some of the readers taught that Spike had gas in this frame, but that is a tail. Yes!, I do dress Spike in outfits in real life. This post gave Spike an answer to all the humiliation he has had to endure.

Spike's World

This was a great caption for a poor drawing. Spike still has a thick neck band in this picture. I drew these carttons while substitute teaching. The lesson plans I had usually would not take an entire period, so both students and teacher would get bored. This caption came from the looks of one of these bored students.

Spike's World

Finally! Modern Spike! I do not know why Spike is always showing his left side,(it is not his best side.) I had the brilliant idea of making patterns of Spike and copying them each cartoon. All I would have to do was shade and put in a caption. It would cut down on drawing time and make the drawings much more consistant. That it did, but they were only as good as the original pattern. Now, they are consistantly bad.

Spike's World

Another dark and twisted Spike. I started to get a theme working by this one. Spike was still a little chubby here, but this was actually one of the better free hand drawings of Spike. Notice the tail is pointing up- try to find another posting with that look.

Spike's World

Another of the Fat Spike drawings. I had begun to find the look I wanted, I just could not draw it. The gag again was priceless. This tool of irony will be used in lot's of the rest of the Spike's World posts. It also shows the dark humor that runs through my veins. This was my favorite of the very early attempts. Notice a few of the primitive drawings. Look at the very thick collar. I never really decided if that was a collor or part of Spike's natural color scheme.

Spike's World

This really reflected true life. I was in charge of keeping the real Spike from "going" inside the house. If I was staying home, I might walk Spike five or six times a day. I really used these walks to think of new Spike's World entrys. There were times Spike would sull and not move, then our walks turned into "drags".

Spike's World

Wow! Was Spike drawn heavy in this strip. Spike the character is loosely based on a real animal. This picture of Spike depressed the real Spike, but the joke is funny. Several years ago during March Madness, ESPN ran a promo on college basketball where they called the UCONN Huskys the "big boned girls." I always remember good gags.

Spike's World

This was another attempt to find the personality of the strip. This is Spike in his house. I still like the concept, Spike museing from behind locked doors as it was. The caption of the gag is really one of the most solid I have done. It uses the irony of Spike complaining about the light keeping him up, not the process of being incarcerated. Notice also, how small the writing is. When this was drawn on a full sheet of typing paper it looked big enough.

Spikes World

I am still playing with the look of Spike. In the old days,(last April,) I was more concerned with the message than the messenger. Boy! Was I in the dark. America and the rest of the faithful followers of Spike's World want quality art, not smart dialouge. Luckily, I have been able to twart them in both cases.

Spikes World

A rare Spike sitting pose. This cartoon introduced the style of the "off stage" straight man. While most people think that is me, it is really a paid actor playing the role of "Pop". Nothing is too much for a quality cartoon. I actually like the look of Spike in this panel, but I could never reproduce the angst he shows here in another post.
